USAID. MISSION TO LESOTHO
Project, follow-on to Project 6320031, to institutionalize in the Research Division (RD) of the Government of Lesotho"s Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) an ongoing farming systems research (FSR) unit to create more productive agricultural enterprise mixes that are acceptable to farmers, sensitive to their management ability, appropriate to available resources, and protective of the land base.
1978
Abstract
The RD will implement the project. To help create the FSR unit, the project will provide M.S. degree training to 16 RD personnel who will be assigned to the FSR unit and short-term training to 10 others who will be assigned to complementary positions elsewhere in the MOA. The new unit will determine research priorities through social and economic benefit/cost analysis. Farming systems incorporating alternative technologies and farm management practices will be developed and tested in three different physical environments. Alternative strategies for farmer education will also be developed and tested. A program for replicating farming systems will be underway by the project"s end. Finally, a research and information database and an agricultural research library will be established. Research results will be disseminated to all relevant groups and professional linkages with research institutions worldwide will be established.
