Abstract
The program's main objective was to increase the feeling of psychological safety among youth in their environment. During the past five years, the program enrolled youth in various activities to develop and enhance connections between youth and community stakeholders. The program believed that if youth felt free to express their ideas, thoughts, and feelings in their environment, an improved enabling environment would be developed to facilitate the creation of new opportunities addressing youth-identified needs for positive youth engagement. The program's activities increased the feeling of psychological safety among 87.1% (1001 out of 1149) of surveyed youth participants. The majority of participants, 630 females and 371 males, reported increased feelings of psychological safety in their environment as a result of their participation in YP activities. The highest number of youth reporting increased feelings of psychological safety was in Amman, with 267 youth, followed by Al Balqa with 147 youth, and the lowest number was in Ajloun, with only 6 youth. Demographically, the assessment survey was conducted with 699 (60.8%) female participants and 450 (39.2%) male participants. The age of respondents ranged from 10 to 29 years, with an average of 22.5 years old, and the majority were between 20-24 years old. In terms of nationalities, 92.8% of respondents were Jordanians, 4.2% were Syrians, 1.1% were Palestinian, and the rest were from other nationalities. The assessment also sought to understand the impact of the program's activities on youth. A survey was distributed to participants, which included a series of seven questions to measure the change in the feeling of psychological safety. The results showed that 843 (73.4%) respondents stated that they did not experience or witness any kind of bullying during their participation in YP activities, and 983 (85.6%) of the youth highlighted that they were able to overcome challenges in engaging with other youth in the program because their families were comfortable with the environment that YP created in the community. When asked directly if they feel psychologically and emotionally safe in the environment that YP created, 1111 out of 1149 respondents mentioned that they feel safe. Disaggregated by gender, 686 female respondents and 425 male respondents mentioned that they feel safe. The youth mentioned many reasons that drove them to feel safe during their participation in YP activities, including the attitude and respect that YP staff showed to youth, the suitability of the facilities, and the welcoming nature of the staff. The program's activities have had a significant impact on the feeling of psychological safety among youth in their environment. The results of the assessment survey indicate that the program has been successful in creating an enabling environment that facilitates the creation of new opportunities addressing youth-identified needs for positive youth engagement.
