Puddling representative Philippine lowland rice soils did not increase rice growth and soil nutrient uptake under conditions of restricted or no leaching.
SANCHEZ, PEDRO A. · 1970

Abstract
Puddling decreased losses of applied N in field and barrel conditions, which resulted in higher yields in the field. A well-granulated soil performed as well as a flooded puddled one whether it was flooded or had a water table kept at the A-B horizon interphase. The advantages of puddling tropical rice soils do not seem related to increases in nutrient availability but, rather, to indirect effects of water relations.
