1970

Abstract
National Academy of Sciences (NAS). The purpose of the conference, held in Washington, D.C. in July 1974, was to plan mechanisms to aid agricultural and rural development in Ghana. The conference was attended by representatives from AID, the World Bank, and the Smithsonian Institution, as well as by NAS and CSIR officials. This proceedings report begins with a review of the proposed development mechanisms. These include the creation of a Planning and Analysis Group to determine science policies and research priorities and the establishment of an ad hoc joint study group to investigate the agricultural impact of drought in the savannah region of northern Ghana. The conference also specified areas particularly in need of scientific and industrial research and proposed the establishment of instrumentation and information facilities. AID and World Bank assistance to Ghana was discussed, and the CSIR-NAS Cooperative program was reviewed. Finally, it was agreed that a CSIR-NAS committee meeting would be held annually. This proceedings report contains the text of opening remarks, speeches, and discussions.
