The National Academy of Sciences and the Philippine Council for Agriculture and Resources Research convened a meeting for a systematic review of the data examining Leucaena leucocephala.

Abstract
This report introduces leucaena to agencies and institutions engaged in development assistance and agriculture in tropical countries and to research institutions with relevant interests. Leucaena is a versatile legume whose full potential is untapped. Its possibilities are important to marginal lands and low income farmers. Researchers in the Philippines have demonstrated leucaena"s potential for reforesting eroded hillslopes, for use as firewood, for fueling industrial boilers, and for producing paper pulp. The potential of this plant as a crop is discussed without regard for any particular country where it might flourish. Although treated separately in this report, many of leucaena"s uses are related, and the plant can be used for several purposes at the same time. Chapter eight outlines a program for research and action that will help determine leucaena"s potential to ease major feed, wood, and fuel shortages and to help solve deforestation problems in the tropics. Recommendations include: establishing an abundant supply of high-quality leucaena seeds; conducting extensive trials aimed at comparing performance of each of the most promising leucaena varieties; performing research in areas where present uncertainties about leucaena cultivation will hinder its widespread use; and assessing the value of leucaena in shifting-cultivation and green manure and agro-forestry. Also recommended are: forestry research trials with Salvador type leucaena, and pilot size plantations for production of firewood, fuelwood, and charcoal. French and Spanish resumes are at the end of the report.
