Abstract
The data must be compiled, entered into computer files, and cleaned before they are in a format suitable for analysis. Ideally, data processing should serve to enhance the integrity and quality of the data. Attention is given to various types of errors that commonly characterize large survey data sets to help researchers plan strategies for identifying existing error and protecting the data from the introduction of further error. To guide the researcher, the steps involved in data preparation are described. Since computers increasingly are recognized to be indispensable tools in field research, their role in managing data effectively is highlighted. (Author abstract, modified)
