Abstract
Evaluation covers the period 1/1/78-4/30/80 and is based on files, meetings of the Management and Evaluation Committee (MEC) and of project leaders with USAID, and site visits. The subprojects are generally progressing well. Within the subproject to develop, expand, and manage Indonesia"s aquatic resources, a study tour has been completed in the U.S. by two Geologic Survey of Indonesia (GSI) management staff members. A long-term, on-site consultant is in place. Four candidates have been identified to complete their M.Sc. degrees at the University of Washington and are in intensive English-training courses. The marine science library design has been completed, and Phase I equipment is in place. A librarian candidate is in training and the program is ready to be implemented. There have been delays in authority designation and counterpart funding at the University of Pattimura. The two subprojects designed respectively to utilize aerial photography and satellite imagery in rural development planning and to expand the capability of the GSI in surveying, assessing, and mapping geological resources, hazards, and other land information, have been combined into one activity. Within this combined activity, three trainees in remote sensing have completed short-term training. Two-long term consultants from the U.S. Geologic Survey are in place at the activity site. Gas detector instrumentation and portable seismometers have been delivered to the Volcanological Directorate. "Dry-tilt" equipment to measure pre-eruption swelling of volcanoes has been installed on Mount Merpi and Mount Kelut, and personnel have been trained in the use and maintenance of this equipment. A detailed program outline has been completed for further activity and limited review and advice have been given. Also, an academic M.Sc. candidate is in place. Evaluation of remaining subprojects is included
