GRANT PROVIDED TO THE GOVERNMENT OF TUNISIA ASSISTS THE GOT"S CENTRAL TUNISIA DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY(CTDA) WITH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF A PROJECT TO IMPROVE WATER SUPPLY SYSTEMS IN THE DELEGATIONS OF MAKTHAR, KESTA, AND ROHIA, GOVERNATE OF SILIANA.

Abstract
THIS PROJECT CONTRIBUTES TO A CONTINUING PROGRAM INITIATED BY CARE. PROJECT WILL CONSIST OF THE FOLLOWING COMPONENTS: (1)THE CONSTRUCTION OR UPGRADING OF 40 WATER SITES INTO CLOSED SYSTEMS CAPABLE OF PROVIDING WATER TO APPROXIMATELY 16,000 RURAL INHABITANTS IN SILIANA. ACTIVITIES UNDER THIS COMPONENT WILL COMPRISE THE CLEANING, RECONSTRUCTION OR CONSTRUCTION, AND COVERING OF WELLS; OR, IN AREAS WHERE GROUNDWATER SUPPLIES ARE NEGLIGIBLE, THE RENOVATION OR CONSTRUCTION OF CONCRETE RAINWATER CATCHMENTS AND RAIN STORAGE CISTERNS. (2)THE CONSTRUCTION/RECONSTRUCTION OF 10 WATER SUPPLY SITES WHICH WILL UTILIZE DIESEL MOTOR PUMPS AND LINED RESERVOIRS OR GRAVITY FLOW PIPELINE SYSTEMS TO SUPPLY WATER TO HIGHER POPULATION DENSITY AREAS WITHIN MAKTHAR AND ROHIA. (3)THE RETRAINING OF PUMP MAINTENANCE PERSONNEL FROM EXISTING MINISTRY OF PUBLIC HEALTH(MOPH) MAINTENANCE TEAMS TO ENSURE THAT PROJECT WATER SYSTEMS WILL BE PROPERLY MAINTAINED AFTER PROJECT COMPLETION. THIS TRAINING WILL BE IMPLEMENTED BY TECHNICAL ADVISORS FUNDED UNDER GRANT. (4)THE FURTHER (LOCAL) TRAINING OF EXISTING MOPH HEALTH EDUCATION TEAMS. THESE TEAMS WILL VISIT VILLAGES IN THE PROJECT AREA BEFORE AND AFTER WATER SYTEMS CONSTRUCTION TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ON IMPORTANT HEALTH AND HYGIENE PRACTICES. (5)THE TRAINING (BY TECH ADVISORS) OF TUNISIAN MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE PERSONNEL TO UPGRADE THEIR CAPABILITY FOR ADMINISTERING THIS PROJECT. IN ADDITION, UP TO 100 TUNISIAN MASONS, LABORERS, AND DRIVERS WILL RECEIVE TRAINING IN WATER SYSTEMS CONSTRUCTION AND EMPLOYMENT AS A RESULT OF THIS PROJECT. CARE WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR INSTALLING ALL HANDPUMPS FOR THE CLOSED WELLS AND WILL ENSURE THAT MAINTENANCE OF SYSTEMS IS CONTINUED AFTER PROJECT TERMINATION.
