The experiences of "George," a composite agricultural economist, are used to illustrate the different problems which social scientists face within the highly constrained environment of farming systems research (FSR).

Abstract
Five potential sources for these conflicts are identified and discussed - personal inadequacies, interdisciplinary communication barriers, poor group dynamics, an inadequate organizational structure, and a struggle for power. Lessons for social scientists, their FSR colleagues, and higher level policymakers are drawn. Conflicts, it is concluded, are inherent in multidisciplinary research and should be taken into account in the planning process.
