INTERNATIONAL CROPS RESEARCH INSTITUTE FOR THE SEMI-ARID TROPICS (ICRISAT)
In order to reduce site-specific constraints to the transfer of improved crop production technologies in the Sahel, a soil survey was conducted of the Sahelian Center, located in southern Niger, of the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics.

Abstract
After providing background information on the agriculture, climate, vegetation, and geology of southern Niger and reviewing the survey"s field and laboratory methods, this report on the survey presents a detailed inventory of the spatial distribution of the soils at the Sahelian Center and information on the range of chemical, physical, and mineralogical properties of Center soils, as well as on soil fertility capability and soil management practices. Soil genesis is also reviewed. Lastly, seven samples (pedons) from five different soil series and a sample termite mound are described and data on their soil properties are given in tabular form. The text includes 8 additional tables and 6 figures. A glossary, 19 references (1949-83), and 2 aerial maps showing the location of sampling sites and transects are also provided.
