Although agricultural growth is considered critical for industrialization and general economic growth, the process of agricultural growth itself has remained outside the concern of most development economists.

Abstract
The paper reviews the evolution of thought in the literature on agricultural and economic development. The authors elaborate the concept of induced technical and institutional innovation and discuss the implications of the innovation perspective. They hypothesize that the institutions that govern the use of technology or the "mode" of production can also be induced to change in order to enable both individuals and society to take fuller advantage of new technical opportunities under favorable market conditions.
