Abstract
The project focuses on improving literacy instruction in primary schools, particularly in the Muchinga Province of Zambia. One of the key strategies employed by the project is the use of a five-step model of literacy instruction, which involves presenting, modelling, guiding, practicing, and interacting during a literacy session. The project's coaching and mentoring approach is designed to support new teachers in developing their competencies in literacy instruction. Mentors work closely with teachers to provide information, skills, and resources, facilitating ongoing rapport and skill transfer. This approach has been particularly beneficial for teachers who have not had the opportunity to undergo physical training. For instance, Exhilda Malubeni, a grade two teacher at Mishishi Primary School in Chinsali, Muchinga Province, credits the mentoring and coaching process with improving her reading scores and learner outcomes. The project's focus on interactive methods has been shown to be highly effective in engaging students and improving literacy outcomes. Interactive methods, such as presenting, modelling, guiding, practicing, and interacting, have been found to be beneficial in promoting student learning and motivation. By incorporating these methods into their teaching practices, teachers like Exhilda Malubeni have seen significant improvements in their students' reading scores and overall literacy outcomes. The project's impact has been observed in various schools across the Muchinga Province, with teachers reporting improved learner outcomes and increased confidence in their teaching practices. The project's coaching and mentoring approach has been instrumental in supporting teachers in developing their competencies and improving literacy instruction in primary schools. By providing ongoing support and resources, the project has helped to create a positive and supportive learning environment for students and teachers alike. The USAID Let's Read Project's focus on school-based coaching and mentoring has been shown to be an effective strategy for improving teaching and learning outcomes in primary schools. By providing teachers with the skills, knowledge, and resources they need to deliver high-quality literacy instruction, the project has helped to create a more supportive and effective learning environment for students. The project's impact has been observed in various schools across the Muchinga Province, with teachers reporting improved learner outcomes and increased confidence in their teaching practices.
