Abstract
External evaluation covers the period 10/82-11/90. Postharvest research units have been successfully established within each of the four participating ICAR centers, and inputs and activities have laid the foundation for accomplishing the overall purpose. The SP has provided U.S. training for 28 scientists as well as research equipment and TA by 8 U.S. consultants. The A.I.D. inputs received early in the project have had a positive impact on research quality and type, although delays have occurred in construction and remodelling of research facilities and in the purchase and delivery of research equipment. Additional assistance will be required to install and provide proper training in the latter. Substantial progress has been made on the following research topics: (1) pre-harvest and harvesting factors; (2) loss assessment, handling, and transport; (3) storage techniques; (4) processing methods; and (5) waste utilization. The planned establishment of collaborative research between U.S. and Indian scientists will greatly benefit the centers.
