Abstract
The project's primary objective is to strengthen the capacity of legal advocacy organizations to effectively represent the interests of citizens. This is achieved through a range of activities, including developing demand-driven technical training for partner organizations, providing technical assistance to build organizational sustainability, and improving linkages between partner organizations and courts. One of the key activities under Objective 1 is the development of demand-driven technical training for partner organizations on specialized topics such as trial advocacy skills, drafting of policy papers, and legislative drafting. This training aims to enhance the capacity of partner organizations to effectively represent the interests of citizens. Additionally, technical assistance is provided to build the organizational sustainability of partner organizations, including strategic planning, accounting practices, and financial and human resource management. The project also focuses on building a sustainable nationwide network of legal advocacy organizations that address citizen demand for legal services in specific areas of the law. This is achieved through the creation of multiple national networks and associations that bring together legal advocacy organizations focused on similar issues. The project also provides seminars, conferences, and other continuing education training on best practices and legal developments in the specific areas of law targeted by the networks. Furthermore, the project aims to develop partnerships and attract additional private resources to expand and enhance the impact of the program's pro bono efforts. This is achieved through the creation of a national legal sector clearing house that connects private sector lawyers with clients in need of legal assistance. The project also identifies and mobilizes resources from various law firms that can be of assistance to legal advocacy organizations and networks. During the reporting period of July 1 to September 30, 2013, the project made significant progress in achieving its objectives. The project's activities resulted in the development of a range of training programs and materials, including a manual on trial advocacy skills and a guide on legislative drafting. The project also established a number of partnerships with private sector law firms and organizations, which have committed to providing pro bono assistance to legal advocacy organizations and networks. The project's impact is evident in the increased capacity of legal advocacy organizations to effectively represent the interests of citizens. The project's activities have also led to the establishment of a number of national networks and associations of legal advocacy organizations, which are working together to address citizen demand for legal services in specific areas of the law. Additionally, the project's partnerships with private sector law firms and organizations have resulted in the provision of pro bono assistance to legal advocacy organizations and networks, which has enhanced the impact of the program's efforts. The project's geographic focus is on Ukraine, with a particular emphasis on the development of a sustainable nationwide network of legal advocacy organizations. The project's activities are implemented in partnership with a range of stakeholders, including the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine, local government bodies, and national NGOs and legal clinics. The project's timeframes are from May 2010 to May 2014, with a reporting period of July 1 to September 30, 2013.
