Abstract
The campaign aimed to control malaria transmission in high-risk areas. Manicaland Province was a key focus area, with entomological surveillance conducted at Burma Valley and Vumba. In Mashonaland East Province, IRS activities were implemented in collaboration with local partners. Planning and coordination involved training for IRS operations, which included spray operations, supervision, and job aids for spray personnel. A total of 15 IRS campaign vehicles were used to transport spray teams and equipment. Payment of spray teams and vendors was also facilitated. Insecticide needs were assessed and managed throughout the campaign. Inventory assessments were conducted to ensure adequate stock levels. Post-spray conferences were held to review the campaign's progress and identify areas for improvement. Information, education, and communication activities were also implemented to raise awareness about the importance of IRS and to promote community participation. Capacity-building efforts were made to enhance the skills of local health workers and spray teams. Gender mainstreaming was also a key focus area, with efforts made to engage women in the IRS campaign. Entomological surveillance was conducted to monitor the susceptibility of malaria vectors to insecticides and to assess the residual efficacy of IRS. Environmental compliance was a critical aspect of the campaign, with pre-season assessments conducted to identify potential environmental risks. Pre-season environmental compliance assessments were also conducted to ensure that IRS campsites and spray teams were in compliance with environmental regulations. Mid-season and post-season environmental compliance assessments were conducted to monitor the campaign's environmental impact. Monitoring and evaluation were critical components of the campaign, with objectives focused on assessing the campaign's effectiveness and identifying areas for improvement. Data management and collection were key aspects of the M&E framework, with data quality assurance and verification conducted to ensure the accuracy and reliability of data. Results of the 2020 IRS campaign showed a significant reduction in malaria transmission in high-risk areas. Challenges and recommendations for future campaigns were also identified, including the need for improved data management and enhanced community engagement.
