Abstract
BASED ON A REVIEW OF THE UNIVERSITY"S ANNUAL REPORT, EVALUATOR CONCLUDES THAT THE PROJECT IS MAKING SATISFACTORY PROGRESS. THE STATE-OF-THE-ART MATERIAL ON SOIL PHOSPHORUS AVAILABILITY IS ABOUT TWO-THIRDS COMPLETE. OVER (0 INVESTIGATORS WERE CONTACTED WORLDWIDE AND OVER 500 REPRINTS WERE COLLECTED ON THE SUBJECT AREA. CONSIDERABLE ANALYTICAL WORK WAS FINISHED. STATE-OF-THE-ART ON SOIL EROSION IS MORE THAN HALF COMPLETE. GOOD PROGRESS HAS ALSO BEEN MADE IN DEVELOPING STATE-OF-THE-ART MATERIALS ON BIOLOGICAL NITROGEN FIXATION IN FORAGE, LEGUMES, AND GRASSES IN TROPICS. REPLIES FROM MORE THAN 200 QUESTIONNAIRES SENT TO LDC"S HAVE BEEN SUMMARIZED. AN EXHAUSTIVE LITERATURE SURVEY HAS BEEN CONDUCTED ON NITROGEN FIXATION BY PASTURE GRASS BACTERIA ASSOCIATION. WORK IS CONTINUING ON MICORRHIZA ASSOCIATION, ROLE OF SOIL RELATED FACTORS LIMITING BIOLOGICAL NITROGEN FIXATION, ALLEOPATHY, AND NITROGEN FIXATION. THE "TROPICAL SOILS" COMPONENT OF THE GRANT WILL TERMINATE 6/79. USAID HAS APPROVED A FUNDED EXTENSION OF THE "BIOLOGICAL NITROGEN FIXATION" COMPONENT OF THE GRANT FOR ANOTHER 3 YEARS, UNTIL 6/82.
