U.S. strategy on the conservation of biological diversity : an interagency task force report to Congress
Sign inU.S. INTERAGENCY TASK FORCE ON BIOLOGICAL DIVERSITY
The general depletion in developing countries of productive biological resources - such as tropical forests, marine and coastal ecosystems, and watersheds - caused by growing population pressures and the search for short-term economic gain augurs a need to incorporate biological diversity conservation into development planning.

Abstract
After outlining the current conservation activities and programs of 13 U.S. federal agencies, this paper presents a U.S. strategy for helping developing countries conserve biological diversity. Conservation issues in seven areas - policy dialogue and national policies, public awareness and education, institutions and training, research and inventories, resource management, human population pressures, and organizational coordination and nongovernmental organization support - are summarized, and a total of 67 recommendations for action in these areas are detailed.
