The purpose of this report is to briefly analyze urbanization trends and problems in Thailand and to help identify targets of opportunity where USAID assistance might have a significant positive impact.

Abstract
Once identified, selected targets will then be further analyzed to produce a draft strategy for USAID assistance in those areas. This paper reports on research conducted in the following 7 areas, which were identified in the workplan for the Thailand Urban Strategy Assistance Activity: (1) urbanization and national economic development; (2) the national settlement system; (3) urban poverty and the informal sector; (4) the shelter system; (5) urban infrastructure networks; (6) urban management and the system of local government; and (7) The role of the private sector in urban development.
