Abstract
The initiative focuses on improving access to finance for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and strengthening the business environment. BGI's activities are centered around three key value chains: textile/apparel, tourism, and construction materials. In the textile/apparel value chain, BGI launched a comprehensive approach to provide assistance to the sector in January 2015. The initiative involved hosting a business-to-business meeting with Russian retailers in Moscow, which generated significant interest from the buyers. BGI also participated in the Central Asian Fashion Fair in Almaty, gaining insight into the Kazakh apparel market and identifying key challenges in meeting the needs of Russian buyers. In the tourism sector, BGI launched its Destination Management Program in February 2015. The program aims to assist tourism stakeholders in prioritizing and implementing strategies for improving tourism products and services in local communities. BGI conducted road shows to cities throughout Kyrgyzstan to introduce the Destination Management concept and solicit proposals from local stakeholders to develop community-based tourism strategies. The construction materials value chain study, conducted by IBC/JIA with international consultants, began in December 2014. The study aims to map the value chain and complete a stakeholder analysis. The international team returned in late May to complete the second portion of the study. In addition to these initiatives, BGI also worked on strengthening the business environment. The government adopted the Medium- and Long-Term Development Strategy for the Mining Sector for 2015-2035, which sets forth a policy vision based on international practices in mineral resources development. Key policy changes include engaging local communities in resource allocation decisions, providing information transparency to both the Kyrgyz public and potential investors, and consolidating site inspections for environmental protection. BGI's activities in the first quarter of 2015 achieved significant results, including the launch of apparel value chain activities, the launch of the Destination Management Program in tourism, and the initiation of the construction materials value chain study. These initiatives are expected to contribute to the growth and development of the Kyrgyz economy. The USAID Business Growth Initiative is a key component of the USAID REFORMA Project, which aims to promote economic growth and development in the Kyrgyz Republic.
