Abstract
The project aimed to increase the existing capacity of 185 MWs by 10 MWs through the replacement of Unit 1 windings. A field visit conducted by the USAID Energy Policy Program (EPP) in January 2012 verified the completion of works and current status on the replacement of Unit 1 windings, which is expected to be completed in February 2012. Implementation of the rehabilitation work under the Fixed Amount Reimbursement Agreement (FARA) involved the replacement of Unit 1 windings, as well as the installation of new equipment, including seals, pumps, digital governors, and a SCADA system. Purchase orders for the remaining FARA items/equipment have been placed. To ensure environmental compliance with USAID regulations and Government of Pakistan protocols, EPP supported the development of an Environmental Mitigation and Monitoring Plan (EMMP) for the rehabilitation work under FARA. The EMMP was approved by the USAID Mission Environmental Officer and is being implemented by the WAPDA Environmental Cell. The rehabilitation project has made significant progress, with a total disbursement of $10,209,917 out of the committed $16.5 million assistance amount as of January 2012. Amendment-I of the Tarbela FARA revised the completion date to December 31, 2012. The project's implementation is ongoing, with the replacement of Unit 1 windings expected to be completed in February 2012, followed by the replacement/installation of Unit 3 windings. The rehabilitation of Tarbela Hydropower Plant is expected to increase the existing capacity of 185 MWs by 10 MWs, contributing to the country's energy production. The project's implementation is being monitored by the USAID Energy Policy Program, which is responsible for ensuring that the project is completed in accordance with the agreed-upon terms and conditions. The project's environmental impact is being mitigated through the implementation of the Environmental Mitigation and Monitoring Plan (EMMP). The rehabilitation of Tarbela Hydropower Plant is a critical component of Pakistan's energy sector development, and its successful completion will contribute to the country's energy security. The project's implementation is ongoing, with a revised completion date of December 31, 2012. The project's progress will continue to be monitored by the USAID Energy Policy Program to ensure that it is completed in accordance with the agreed-upon terms and conditions.
