Using a Quality Improvement Approach to Strengthen Clinical Zika Services: Head Circumference Measurement and Provider Perceptions in Peru

Abstract
The project focused on improving head circumference measurement and provider perceptions in clinical settings. A QI approach was chosen to address the challenges in providing quality clinical care for Zika patients. The project objectives included improving the quality of clinical care for Zika patients, enhancing provider knowledge and skills, and increasing the adoption of evidence-based practices. The methodology involved a mixed-methods study design, including a quantitative analysis of clinical records and a qualitative analysis of qualitative data from in-depth interviews with healthcare providers. The study population consisted of 15 health facilities in the Tumbes and Piura regions of Peru. The sample size for clinical records was 1,500, and the sample size for in-depth interviews was 30. The data collection methods included a review of clinical records, in-depth interviews with healthcare providers, and a QI fidelity assessment. The results showed that the QI approach was effective in improving head circumference measurement and provider perceptions. The percentage of medical records with head circumference measurement documented and interpreted increased from 12% to 45% over a period of six months. The QI fidelity assessment revealed a high level of adherence to the QI interventions. The qualitative findings indicated that healthcare providers reported an increase in confidence and knowledge about Zika care after participating in the QI interventions. The providers also reported an improvement in their ability to provide high-quality care to Zika patients. The study concluded that the QI approach was effective in improving clinical Zika services in Peru. The limitations of the study included the small sample size and the limited generalizability of the findings. However, the study provided valuable insights into the effectiveness of the QI approach in improving clinical Zika services. The study recommended the continued use of the QI approach to improve the quality of clinical care for Zika patients in Peru.
