Vitamin A deficiency is known to be a problem of major public health significance in a number of less developed countries.
Van Veen, A. G.; Van Veen, M. S. · 1970

Abstract
In its acute form in young children it leads to partial or total blindness and thus has widespread economic and social implications. Not enough is known about the extent and seriousness of less acute forms of hypovitaminosis A. The problem as a whole is commanding increasing interest and attention. This "position paper" is a contribution to CDC-AID efforts to delineate the problems and the possibilities for concrete assistance. In the course of preparing the report, discussions were held with FAO nutrition staff in Rome, and WHO nutrition staff in Geneva.
