Abstract
The policy defines workplace violence as behavior that inflicts or threatens to inflict damage to property, serious harm, injury, or death to others at the workplace. Threats, intimidation, and zero-tolerance standards are also defined within the policy. When a violent act occurs, employees are required to inform their immediate manager or supervisor. If the offender is the supervisor, the employee should contact the Department Director. The Department Director will then contact the Human Resources Director, who will coordinate the response to the incident. In emergency situations or cases of criminal activity, the Human Resources Director will contact the Mayor and the Police Department. Incidents involving emergency situations and/or criminal activity will be referred to the Police Department for assessment and inquiry. In other cases, the Human Resources Director will conduct an internal inquiry. The inquiry process involves data collection, interviews with the alleged victim and offender, and a determination of disciplinary action. The alleged victim and offender will be interviewed separately, with the goal of developing a true and accurate account of the incident. During the inquiry, the alleged victim will be asked to provide details about the incident, including the date, time, and location. The alleged offender will also be asked to provide their side of the story and describe their relationship with the victim. The inquiry will be conducted in a non-judgmental and sensitive manner, with the goal of determining the facts of the incident. Disciplinary action will be taken against the accused if found guilty, which may involve a warning, transfer, or termination of employment. Serious bypass of the policy may result in immediate termination of employment without warning. The policy emphasizes the importance of maintaining a workplace free of violence and the threat of violence, and encourages employees to report any incidents of violence or threats.
