Abstract
The project has been operating in its original area for 69 months and in its new area for 24 months. Mid-term evaluation covers the period 1987-10/93. The project has made good progress towards meeting its year two objectives in its new area. In both old and new project areas, over 90% of the project's objectives had been realized by September 1993 with respect to childhood immunization, diarrhea treatment, kitchen gardens, Vitamin A distribution, contraceptive use, prenatal care, training of health workers, and establishment of functioning community health committees. In addition, the new project area has achieved over 90% of year two goals in tetanus immunization of childbearing women, and infant and child growth monitoring. The old project area has achieved over 90% of year two goals for the formation of women's cooperatives. The project is also distinguished by its success in income generation and its potential for sustainability. WRC needs to improve training methods, add a professional health educator to its staff, improve quality control of health information, expand income generation (including development of a sustainability strategy), increase networking with other NGO/PVOs, and avoid non-sustainable direct service activities.
