West Africa Plastic Manufacturing and Distribution in the Sanitation and Hygiene Supply Chain: Landscape Study

Among the landscape’s key objectives were to better understand where manufacturing can be expanded in the region, and to determine which companies can accelerate production and sales of plastic sanitation products - particularly SATO products - in this region. This landscape contributes to the global evidence base on plastic M&D and is being shared with the broader sanitation sector in hopes of accelerating market entry for impact-focused innovators in the WASH space. M&D LANDSCAPE EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Country-Level Insights The landscape included site visits and in-person interviews with twenty-nine manufacturers and distributors from the region. They were asked about their production capacity, retailer relationships and channels, price points, terms of partnership, any raw material tariff implications, exclusivity requests, and processes and timelines for introducing new product lines. Explore the M&D Database About the Partnership for Better Living Launched in October 2021, the Partnership for Better Living (PBL), is a five-year cooperative agreement awarded by USAID to LIXIL and its social business, SATO. It aims to increase sustained household access to sanitation and increase adoption of key hygiene behaviors through market-based approaches for at least 2 million people by 2026 in USAID’s High-Priority Countries.
