This document is a quality improvement (QI) brief on safe surgery in Nigeria, specifically focusing on maternal and newborn health.
2024

Abstract
It describes the implementation of three QI approaches - Maternal, Perinatal, and Child Death Surveillance and Response (MPCDSR), Robson Classification, and the World Health Organization (WHO) Surgical Safety Checklist - in secondary health facilities in Nigeria. The brief presents the results of these interventions, including a decline in maternal deaths and cesarean deliveries, and improved clinical practices. It also highlights the challenges faced during implementation, such as reporting and follow-up issues, and limited demand for data and accountability. The document concludes by emphasizing the need for larger cultural shifts around data use for planning and decision-making, as well as the importance of institutionalizing accountability frameworks and addressing staffing shortages.
