Landscape Assessment: Food Processing in Feed the Future Investments - Executive Summary (December 2019)

It was published in December 2019 by USAID Advancing Nutrition, a multi-sectoral nutrition project led by JSI Research & Training Institute, Inc. The report assesses how food processing has been incorporated into Feed the Future programming and provides recommendations for improving food processing activities to increase year-round access to safe, nutritious foods. The assessment reviewed 142 Feed the Future projects, 63 of which had a food processing component, and 26 of which had a nutrition objective. The report highlights opportunities to improve diet quality through food processing, including improving assessments, incorporating gender considerations, and enhancing social and behavior change interventions. It also provides recommendations for USAID and implementing partners to improve food processing activities, including conducting adequate assessments, incorporating guidance into project design, and ensuring sufficient funding and time for implementation.
