Abstract
The task force aimed to ensure that family planning (FP) users have access to quality implant removal when and where they desire, for any reason. This is a critical component of contraceptive implant scale-up, as it enables FP users to use their method of choice and to stop using it when they desire. The task force curated a collection of 20 essential resources for contraceptive implant removal, highlighting a critical yet often-overlooked component of contraceptive implant scale-up. The eight client-centered conditions for quality implant removal serve as a roadmap for the collection, which includes resources for competent and confident providers, supplies and equipment, implant removal data collection, affordable or free services, accessible services, user education, reassurance and counseling, and system management for difficult removals. The task force reviewed lessons and guidance from field experiences and research initiatives on optimal ways to address gaps in service availability and delivery. They prioritized materials found most useful and utilized criteria for selection, including the best choice for a given topic, representation of a comprehensive range of issues, applicability to different settings, publication date and relevance, and usefulness to FP program managers or technical advisors. The curated list of 20 essential resources includes a mix of learning resources, publications, service delivery, and measurement tools. The resources are categorized into four areas: background and advocacy, service delivery, measurement and assessment, and country and programmatic experience. Each resource includes a summary description of the resource and why it is considered essential to contraceptive implant removal. The collection includes resources developed by the Global Implant Removal Task Force, as well as other resources from family planning implementing partners. The task force aimed to fill gaps in existing resources, and several new resources were developed to address these gaps. The collection is intended to support FP program managers and advisors in proactively planning and implementing client-centered implant removal services. The 20 essential resources on contraceptive implant removal are designed to support the delivery of high-quality, client-centered implant removal services. They include resources on topics such as provider training, service delivery, measurement and assessment, and country and programmatic experience. The collection is intended to be a comprehensive snapshot of the critical resources for contraceptive implant removal, and it is hoped that these resources will be useful to FP program managers and advisors. The task force recognized the importance of ensuring that FP users have access to quality implant removal services, and they aimed to provide a curated list of the most essential resources to support this goal. The collection is intended to be a valuable resource for FP program managers and advisors, and it is hoped that it will contribute to the scale-up of high-quality, client-centered implant removal services.
