Abstract
MOOCs are courses available online, typically free, that expand access to quality education. They are open to anyone with an internet connection and are backed by major institutions and the world's leading universities. MOOCs are available in numerous languages and offered in different fields of study, from high-tech science to food management. MOOCs are accessible at any time and from any place, allowing learners to fit their education into their busy schedules. Educators are uniquely positioned to understand the educational needs of youth and young adults and to promote lifelong learning opportunities. In fact, 40% of learners who take open online courses in the US are educators, improving their knowledge and work-related skills. Educators can stay up-to-date on the latest trends in their area of expertise, pedagogy, and technology by taking MOOCs. MOOCs can be a valuable resource for educators to help their students identify relevant courses with valuable content. Educators can offer and mentor MOOC support groups, enrich their classes with MOOC content, and hold information sessions. By sharing their experience, educators can make their students feel connected to a wider audience around the world. Many educators have already taken the initiative to try MOOCs themselves, recognizing the benefits of lifelong learning. Several platforms offer MOOCs, including Miriadax, edX, Udacity, and Coursera. Miriadax offers Spanish language courses from leading Latin American institutions, while edX is an online learning destination and MOOC provider founded by Harvard University and MIT in 2012. Udacity offers a range of online courses from entrepreneurship to physics and genomics, and Coursera partners with top universities and organizations worldwide to offer courses online. These platforms provide a wealth of opportunities for individuals to expand their knowledge and skills. The Advancing MOOCs for Development Initiative is a project that aims to promote the use of MOOCs for development. Funded by IREX and implemented by Makaia, the initiative recognizes the potential of MOOCs to improve education and skills development in developing countries. By providing access to quality education and skills training, MOOCs can help individuals and communities achieve their development goals.
