Abstract
The youth leadership program will consist of two components: (1) leadership training and other programs organized around the needs of disadvantaged young people and (2) training for individuals in the black community interested in working with young people. Under the first component, a SABSWA coordinator will visit youth groups to assess their needs and then develop programs in such areas as leadership skills, career guidance, job placement, self- awareness, and communication skills. Under the second component, SABSWA branches throughout South Africa will conduct training primarily for social workers in the basic principles of youth work, youth program design and planning, and the social, political, and economic environment as it affects black youth. About 180 social workers, youth leaders, and others will receive this training. The AIDS component will involve training for social workers and other health care and community development professionals in all SABSWA regions. These trainees will in turn conduct similar training with community groups. Courses will last one week and cover AIDS counselling skills and psychosocial aspects of AIDS. These trainees will in turn conduct similar training with community groups. Each SABSWA branch will incorporate AIDS education as part of its core community education program.
