Abstract
The grant will also, through a subgrant, support publication of an educational supplement to a local newspaper. Tembaletu is a recently established non-racial community education center which plans to provide a wide range of nonformal courses, including e.g., literacy, numeracy, health and nutrition, general business skills, organizational development, and personal skills training. Grant funds will cover office and classroom furniture and supplies, library resources, and selected operating costs and travel expenses. Through a subgrant to the University of Natal"s Center for Adult Education, the grant will also support the development of a special educational section within "Echo," a weekly supplement aimed at disadvantaged readers published in the Natal Witness newspaper. Through distance teaching methods, the educational section will provide resources and materials useful to people with limited literacy and education. Subjects may include simple English, health care, family law, career guidance, numeracy, and basic economic issues. Back-up training will be arranged through local community organizations. Grant funds are provided for staff salaries, equipment, and operating costs.
