Grant is provided under the Community Outreach and Leadership Development project (6740301) to the Progressive Primary Health Care Network (PPHC) to implement a nationwide AIDS prevention program in South Africa for individuals and organizations disadvantaged by apartheid.

Abstract
The key to the project will be the use of community AIDS workers (CAW"s) trained and supervised by PPHC"s regional and national staff. CAW"s have been found to be particularly effective in modifying the sexual behavior of fellow community members. The CAW"s will initiate AIDS awareness and education programs for or in conjunction with the following types of groups: community organizations, civic groups, churches, unions, youth and women"s clubs, health care organizations, and political groups. Activities may include workshops, lectures, video presentations, and group discussions. The target group will include, but not be limited to, squatters, rural inhabitants, women, hostel dwellers, and young people. Initially, each region will have 12 CAW"s and eventually this number will be expanded to 32 per region. A nationally coordinated media campaign will be run through a professional advertising agency and funded by another donor. This campaign will target a different audience, to include black high school teachers, professional organizations, and black taxi commuters. Grant funds will be used to support the establishment and initial operation (up to 6 months) of the PPHC"s national AIDS office, interim activities in the North-Eastern Transvaal region, and establishment and operation of the community AIDS programs in the Southern Transvaal, Natal, and the Western Cape.
