Abstract
The program will raise women"s knowledge and awareness of HIV/AIDS, impart skills to avoid disease transmission (including condom usage), help families cope with the disease, and develop a home-based care system for those afflicted. It will be carried out through popular mechanisms such as community/women"s meetings, story telling, poetry, drama, street theater, and puppetry, complemented by media activities (e.g., posters, audio tapes, textile printing, and pamphlets) in connection with church and cultural activities such as youth group meetings, United Women"s Groups, etc. Some 100 community health workers will be trained to carry out the program. The primary target group of the program are women in rural areas in Western Transvaal and Southern Natal, and peri-urban communities in the Western Cape who live in conditions of severe poverty. Secondary target groups include literacy facilitators and traditional healers.
