Sign inUSAID. MISSION TO SOUTH AFRICA
Grant is provided under the Educational Support and Training project (6740302) to PROMAT College Trust to provide scholarships to black South African primary and secondary school teachers for matriculation certificates and university degrees.
1989

Abstract
PROMAT will work with the African Teachers Association of South Africa (ATASA) in implementing the project. PROMAT will offer one-year courses, which combine academic preparation for the matriculation certificate with supplementary courses on teaching methodology, at each of its five South African campuses. The number of teachers trained will be between 300 and 1,200, depending on whether the South African government continues to provide paid study leave to teachers involved in the program, and on whether full or partial scholarships are funded by PROMAT through this grant. In addition, 25 one-year university scholarships will be provided to teachers who exhibit exceptional potential for leadership. Scholarships will be distributed equally among ATASA"s provincial affiliates. PROMAT will also conduct two seminars per year on topics related to promoting a nonracial education system for representatives of ATASA"s provincial affiliates and other teachers" unions. Institutional support to ATASA"s national office and provincial affiliates will also be provided.
