Grant is provided under the Educational Support and Training project (6740302) to the Independent Teacher Enrichment Centre (ITEC) to upgrade the skills of black South African primary and high school science teachers in rural and urban areas of the Border, Ciskei, and Transkei regions.

Abstract
ITEC"s program will include (1) an outreach program of a series of seminars, workshops, conferences, and follow-up activities for disadvantaged science teachers, and (2) provision, on a cost sharing basis, of science educational materials to participating schools, including experiment kits, workbooks, and other necessary equipment; some training, materials development, etc., will be provided through three other local alternative science programs -- the Urban Foundation Science Project, the Science Education Project, and the Shell Science Project -- under ITEC"s coordination. The grant also funds the development of a science resource center at ITEC"s center in East London, including a laboratory and written and other educational resources which will be available to teachers under a lending system. At least 450 teachers from at least 20 primary and 20 high schools will be trained, and become active participants in the newly formed Regional Science associations.
