Grant is provided to the Department of Family Medicine of Brown University"s Memorial Hospital to implement a Family Medicine Specialty (FHS) Program aimed at training a cadre of primary care, family health physicians for Jordan"s Ministry of Health (MOH).
1993

Abstract
The grantee will develop a detailed curriculum and protocols for the program, including standards for accreditation and certification, and will establish the program at two Jordanian universities -- the University of Jordan in Amman and the Jordan University for Science and Technology (JUST) in Irbid. Ten physicians in fields such as pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology, internal medicine, surgery, and community and family medicine will receive short-term observation and training in the United States to prepare them to assume roles as faculty members in the FHS program; the project will also provide short-term study tours or residency programs in third countries to eight family health trainers or promising senior residents. The FHS program will begin by training 4-6 residents at each of the participating universities. It will also develop "teaching centers" to serve the two universities as "community laboratories" for research in the optimal care of common problems, community-based primary care, quality assurance, and cost-effectiveness.
