Abstract
The project will include studies, training, a court administration diagnostic review, and observational travel. The studies component will concentrate on: (1) juridical culture in Chile, and the structure, organization, and function of the courts; and (2) judicial training. Specific targets are to: design four research projects; complete six analytic reports; and conduct three consensus-building roundtable discussions. Secondly, CPU will develop training materials and conduct seminars, workshops, and short courses for judicial personnel and court legal assistants, and administrative staff. Five 1-day seminars, three 3-day workshops, and six short courses, will be developed, each with 30 participants, for a total of 240 trainees. All training will be carried out in collaboration with the National Association of Magistrates and its Institute of Judicial Studies. Thirdly, CPU will conduct a pilot diagnostic review of court administration, probably focusing on the budgetary process and financial management/planning. The grant will also finance U.S. observation travel for 10 judges under the U.S. Information Service"s International Visitors Program.
