Abstract
The new Atitlan Biosphere Reserve will include the High Zone of the Subcuenca Azul and the three bays on the Lake"s south side, as well as "cushion zones" to protect the natural resources while providing inhabitants with job sources and wood for cooking and heating, construction, and other uses. AALA, in addition to making technical studies, will take measurements and map the various areas to be preserved; build minimal infrastructure (e.g., visitors" centers and trails) along with four cultural centers for tourism and research; develop forest nurseries and seed nurseries for the cushion zones; and train personnel as guards. The work will be carried out in cooperation with local communities, municipalities, and public and private agencies.
