Grant, follow-on to 9365428, to Appropriate Technology International (ATI) to develop and demonstrate the benefits of commercially viable appropriate technologies.

Abstract
ATI will sponsor subprojects to help small enterprises and local organizations to develop, adapt, and market specific technologies that are appropriate for local conditions. Substantive program areas will be identical to the ATI II project (9365428): agricultural processing and the use of agricultural waste; mineral resource technologies; equipment and support for small farms; and other opportunities which fall outside the above areas. However, whereas in the earlier project ATI always subgranted A.I.D. funds to local organizations, ATI will now use A.I.D. funds to leverage resources from other donors. This will enable ATI to dramatically increase the number and size of its field projects. In all, ATI will provide or leverage funds for 76 field projects, each of which will develop or disseminate at least one technology; 57 of these technologies will be innovative, and 19 will be replications. It is expected that the projects will create some 10,500 jobs and generate 2,449 new microenterprises and 129 small enterprises. In addition, ATI will produce 30 policy impact assessments related to specific technologies and train 90-300 subproject staff members.
