Abstract
Both projects will be implemented in conjunction with community-level efforts of the Ministry of Health (MOH). The BCSP will be extended into the Masindi district, an area with a total of 80,958 potential beneficiaries. Activities will include: training community health workers and traditional birth attendants, including training of trainers; training community-level MOH staff in technical aspects of child survival interventions; immunizing 90% of children aged 12-23 months and providing tetanus toxoid to pregnant women; and teaching mothers to identify and treat/refer diarrheal disease and acute respiratory infection in their children and to identify at least three modes of HIV transmission. The project will also promote modern contraceptive use and exclusive breastfeeding among mothers. An income-generating component, including management training for 20 community groups, will help ensure sustainability. The KCSP will extend its activities to 40 more villages for a total of 160 villages and a combined beneficiary population of 24,667. Activities will include: malaria control; control of malaria and oral rehydration therapy management; the Expanded Program of Immunization; promotion of exclusive breastfeeding, appropriate weaning practices, and growth monitoring; provision of Vitamin A supplements; reduction of high-risk births through the promotion of modern contraceptives and extension of pre- and post-natal care; and training in the causes and methods of HIV/AIDS transmission. The project will continue to institutionalize child protective behaviors at home and to build community capacity to manage and sustain child survival activities in partnership with the MOH.
