Grant is provided under the Technical Support/Child Survival Project (9380500) to Food for the Hungry (FH) to conduct maternal/child health care programs, with emphasis on children under 2, in 100 communities in the Bolivian Altiplano (La Paz and Potosi).
1989

Abstract
FH will register 80% of the project"s target population (children 0-2 years and women 15-45), and will train 200 health promoters in a package of child survival interventions, including oral rehydration therapy and dietary management of diarrhea, growth monitoring, and health and nutrition education (including iodine supplementation and breastfeeding). The health promoters will in turn train 8,500 mothers in these interventions, and will themselves receive training in additional areas such as goiter prevention and acute respiratory infection case detection and referral. It is expected that 85% of mothers with children under 2 years will participate in the training activities. FH will also provide logistical and promotional support to help the Ministry of Health"s (MOH) Expanded Program of Immunization (EPI) campaign to immunize 80% of children and 60% of women aged 15-45. All programs will be promoted through mothers" centers, community leaders, and educational filmstrips (using solar-powered projectors). FH will also expand mass media publicity by developing 30-60 radio spots in Spanish, Aymara, and Quechua, for local radio stations. Besides supporting the EPI program, FH will assist the MOH by: (1) assisting in the selection of health promoters to be trained as birth attendants by the government; (2) sharing information from its management information system; and (3) selling oral rehydration salts provided by the government.
