AID cooperative agreement no. PDC-0158-A-00-1103-00 with the Foundation for the Peoples of the South Pacific to support a program entitled `FSP/NGO consortium building project for sustainable forestry development"

Grant is provided under the Matching Grants to PVOs project (9380158) to the Foundation for the Peoples of the South Pacific (FSP) to promote sustainable use of tropical rain forests by helping local NGOs in Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu to train small sawmill owners as effective agents for environmental protection policies aimed at the rain forests.

Abstract

FSP will develop an existing model of NGO involvement in profitable environmental protection in Papua New Guinea. After 2 years, FSP will apply the lessons learned to the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. NGO training will involve comprehensive environmental education, manufacturing and servicing of portable sawmills, marketing and management skills for NGO staff and sawmill owners, and monitoring and evaluation.
