Grant is provided under the PVO Co-financing project (8790001) to The Nature Conservancy to support the work of the South Pacific Regional Environmental Programme (SPREP) by classifying the terrestrial and marine ecosystems of ten South Pacific countries (Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Niue, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, and Western Samoa).

Abstract
The classifications will be used to select ecosystems for conservation. The Nature Conservancy will begin by producing two working papers summarizing existing approaches to terrestrial and marine ecosystem classification. It will then conduct a 1-week meeting of eight experts to classify the region"s ecosystems, identify representative sites on small-scale maps, and prepare a multiple- criteria system for evaluating ecosystem classes for conservation. A final report on the classification systems, including maps, will be prepared.
