Abstract
PVO, to implement a demonstration and training program in Manica Province to improve the capacity of community organizations and the Ministry of Health (MOH) to deliver primary health care to women, children, and displaced populations. The project will be carried out in five communities for possible replication throughout the Province. MHC has been working in Manica since 1988 with support from UNICEF; this project extends its assistance into adjacent districts. MHC"s objectives are to: (1) strengthen existing and introduce other low-cost, replicable programs for immunization, oral rehydration therapy, nutrition, and women"s health; (2) support community-based maternal/child health care through training and supervision of traditional birth attendants, community health workers, community activists, and community organizations; (3) strengthen health planning, evaluation, and coordination among governmental and NGO institutions by evaluating MHC surveillance systems, assessing the financial sustainability of MHC programs, strengthening supervision and management protocols, improving communication, providing health management training, and integrating the management information system into health planning at all levels; (4) support continuing education, especially for community health workers; and (5) assist the MOH, NGOs, and communities in rehabilitation and emergency humanitarian assistance, including health care for displaced populations and material assistance to community-initiated structural rehabilitation projects.
