Grant is provided under the PVO Support Project (6560217) to World Relief Corporation (WRC) to undertake a drought relief project encompassing a dual approach in potable water supply and agricultural recovery in Mozambique"s drought-ravaged Gaza province.
1992

Abstract
To increase the availability of potable water for 22,000 people in Gaza province, WRC will, in cooperation with Mozambique"s Program Nacional de Agua Rural (PRONAR) and Estaleiro Provincial de Agua Rural (EPAR): (1) hire a contractor to drill up to 27 borehole wells in three districts (Mabalane, Chicualacuala, and Chokwe) along the Limpopo corridor; (2) construct or rehabilitate 25 hand-dug wells; (3) install manual pumps at all 52 wells; (4) train 2 persons per community as animators in well/pump construction and maintenance; (5) conduct community education in water purification, sanitation, and hygiene; and (6) provide 1,000 persons with buckets for carrying water, and 25 carts for communal water transport. In the districts of Chokwe, Mabalane, Chiguba, and Chicualacuala, WRC will work with the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA), other agencies, and community organizations to stimulate the recovery of agricultural production by families with cultivatable land, thus encouraging their independence from food aid. Initial activities will involve the distribution of cereal, bean, and vegetable seed and basic tools to 20,240 farming families. Over the longer term, WRC will set up an agricultural extension structure by helping to rehabilitate six Casa Agrarias, which prior to the drought were a principal agricultural supply structure for small farmers. The Casa Agrarias will serve as foci for farmer training and demonstration activities, and for the development of farm associations and informal networks; seed and tool packs will be supplied to an additional 6,000 farmers through the Casa. In addition, WRC will support the MOA in public works activities and agricultural infrastructure activities that represent the initiative of the local community.
