AID grant no. AID/CM/PHA-C-73-25 to the American Association for the Advancement of Science to inform policy makers, especially those in developing countries, of the need to understand cultural factors involved in population change and to assist family planning program administrators in improving family planning services

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) will implement the project. AAAS will establish up to seven projects in developing countries to monitor the impact of rapid population change on society, and in particular, on at least four specific cultural factors: means of subsistence; kinship; social organization; and social stratification/political organization. AAAS will also analyze FP service delivery systems, with attention to such issues as: utilization of indigenous medical practitioners and nonprofessional personnel; sensitization of FP staff to the values and beliefs of client populations; and cultural factors in staff-patient interaction, communication, training, and scheduling and location of sessions. An AAAS task force, including eminent anthropologists and other scientists, will prepare a substantive report on the Cultural Consequences of Rapid Population Change, for use by the U.S. Government during the 1974 World Population Year; country- and region-specific reports will also be prepared and discussed during an international workshop.
