Abstract
ophthalmological technology and surgical expertise to developing countries. The project will include the following activities. (1) Short- term exchange fellowships will be provided for U.S. and foreign ophthalmologists. The former will train ophthalmologists, nurses, and technicians in developing countries and help with the patient load, while the latter will receive training in the United States in advanced surgical techniques and eye bank methods. (2) U.S. professors, surgeons, and U.S. surgical teaching teams (including paramedical personnel) will be sent to program areas to lecture, perform operations, and provide advanced training to local physicians. (3) A paramedical training course will be held in the Philippines for eye health care aides. (4) U.S. personnel sent overseas will assist in the operation of eye banks and tissue preservation units.
