Grant is provided under the Matching Grants to PVO"s Project (9380158) to Operation Smile International (OPS) to provide medical services -- especially surgical correction of cleft lip, cleft palate, and related deformities -- to indigent children in the Philippines and their families.

Abstract
OPS will also strengthen the skills of participating Filipino health professionals. A 162-member OPS team, made up of surgeons, physicians, nurses, dentists, speech pathologists, health educators, medical students and other health professionals from the United States and the Philippines, will carry out three medical services projects, one each at Negros, Naga, and Manila. The team will work for 7 days at each site, concentrating on surgical correction of the problems mentioned above, but also serving the primary health care needs of the community at large. Educational/training activities will include lectures on craniofacial surgery, anethesiology, and child development; curricula development for bilateral medical student exchanges; and workshops on family and community reponses to health problems. OPS also provides some participant training opportunities in the United States and Europe.
