Grant to the Program for Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH) to increase the availability and accessibility of oral rehydration salts (ORS) through the private sector.
1985

Abstract
PATH will identify at least six developing countries in which ORS production is feasible and needed, and will reach agreements with companies in at least four countries to undertake activities leading to ORS manufacture and distribution. This will be a phased process so that the last two countries initiate activities only after an assessment has been conducted at the two initial sites. PATH will provide TA and funds to the ORS producers in such areas as developing an ORS formula, designing factory layout and rehabilitation, and procuring materials and equipment, and will train at least two LDC consultants to provide similar TA. When necessary, PATH will also provide TA for distribution and marketing, such as in package design, instructional and promotional material development, and mass media campaign planning. During the course of the project, PATH will monitor ORS availability and knowledge. Finally, PATH will prepare five technology reviews during the first 2 project years to identify additional opportunities for which commodity support interventions might be useful to A.I.D."s Child Survival Action Program.
