Abstract
In Mali, the existing Macina Child Health project will be expanded to (1) continue to support the Ministry of Public Health"s immunization program, and (2) reinforce and consolidate accomplishments -- in immunization, oral rehydration therapy, child nutrition, and maternal health -- in 60 villages included in the original project and introduce these activities in ten additional villages. In western Honduras, CARE"s Community Health Development project will target 85 rural communities in the departments of Santa Barbara, Copan, Lempira, and Intiboca, in Health Region 5. The project, which will complement CARE"s P.L. 480 feeding programs, will focus on training voluntary community health promoters in collaboration with existing government community health workers and health professionals. CARE will train health promoters to instruct families in nutrition (breastfeeding, maternal/child nutrition, weaning foods, and home gardens), oral rehydration therapy, and the prevention and detection of acute respiratory diseases. Each promoter will be responsible for training eight families. Other project activities are to: establish a growth monitoring and promotion station in each community; introduce a "child-to-child" hygiene education strategies in primary schools; train community health workers in oral rehydration therapy and management of acute respiratory disease; and strengthen the capacity of the Ministry of Health in these interventions.
